Money Bet On The Kentucky Derby

Authentic surprised us all by upsetting Tiz the Law in the Kentucky Derby

Saratoga's own Tiz the Law was expected to win a Kentucky Derby that — for the first time in its history the second leg of the triple crown — but was held off late by 10-1 underdog Authentic. The Bob Baffert-trained horse won the 1.25-mile race and led the majority of the way, with John Velazquez saving just enough of his energy for the final stretch.

The results went official as Authentic first, followed closely by Tiz the Law at second, and Mr. Big News in the show spot. The final finish behind these three went as follows: Honor A.P., Max Player, Storm the Court, Enforceable, NY Traffic, Necker Island, Major Fed, Sole Volante, Winning Impression, Money Moves, Attachment Rate and South Bend. Three horses scratched from the 16-horse field.

It's called the sport of millionaires - and horse racing just added a new one. A Texas woman reaped $1.2 million on an $18 bet on a series of Kentucky Derby day races, officials told ABC News on Sunday. Another Kentucky Derby promotion currently available at TVG is an up to $10 money back special for the all races at Churchill Downs on Friday the 4th, and races 3-7 as well as the Kentucky Derby. The 146th Kentucky Derby is scheduled to go to post at 7:01 p.m. Saturday at Churchill Downs. We’re updating the odds for the race throughout the day. Check back here for the most recent changes.

What are the betting payouts for the 146th Kentucky Derby?

Money Bet On The Kentucky Derby

The payouts for owners are as follows: Authentic wins $1.86 million, Tiz the Law wins $600,000 and Mr. Big News wins $300,000.

The betting payouts, however, are where things get interesting. The following information is courtesy of NBC Sports, and is meant to relay information related to a simple $2 bet. A simple bet to win on Authentic would've netted $18, while a place wager would've netted $6, and a show gamble would've won $5. Tiz the Law to place or show was hardly worth the gamble, as a winner would've only received $3.40 or $3.20 respectively. Believing in Mr. Big News to show, however, would've netted an impressive $16.80.

The exacta, trifecta and superfecta bets are a different story entirely. The exacta paid out at $41, the trifecta netted $1,311.80 and the superfecta won a staggering $7, 925.80.

Another year, another Derby in the books. We hope you all went home winners.

We’ll get a little more bang for our buck by betting on Honor A.P. to win the Kentucky Derby instead of taking the heavy favorite, Tiz the Law. Honor A.P. didn’t run in the Belmont Stakes, the first leg of the Triple Crown, so the thinking is he could be fresher and have less wear and tear. He can also benefit from experienced jockey Mike Smith, who will be going for his third Kentucky Derby win.

It’s chalky to take the top two favorites and pair them in an exacta wager, but these two horses have very good chances to win or place. If we were to wager on Tiz the Law to win, we’d pair him with a horse to finish second in an exacta to give us a bigger payday should we hit.

Major Fed is around a 50-1 longshot to win the Kentucky Derby. The odds are long, but the payoff can be big. Just look at last year when Country Horse won the race as a 65-1 longshot. Major Fed could benefit from post position No. 5, which is where many winners come from in the Run for the Roses.

TVG.com is offering a special sign-up bonus offer that will get you a risk-free first bet up to $300. All you have to do is sign up before September 5, 2020, using the links on this page using promo code ‘DERBY300’ and place your first single horse win bet. If you lose, TVG will credit your account up to $300. This special TVG offer is open to participants in 32 states where TVG is available.

Let’s take a look at some ways to use that TVG offer for the Kentucky Derby.

How To Use TVG’s Kentucky Derby Offer

In order to be eligible to receive the risk-free bet, you’ll need to place an eligible wager. TVG defines eligible wagers as single horse wagers, so exotic bets do not count. Examples of single horse wagers are bets to win, bets to win/place, bets to win/show, or bets to win/place/show.

Coming off a Belmont Stakes victory, Tiz the Law is the betting favorite for the Kentucky Derby, and a fairly sizable favorite at that. Trained by Barclay Tagg, Tiz the Law is the only horse with a chance to win the Triple Crown in 2020. The Kentucky Derby is the second leg of the Triple Crown and many will be betting this horse simply because they want to see history made.

On a winning streak, Tiz the Law has shown dominance over other horses, so it’s fair that he is the favorite. The thing is, being such a big favorite, Tiz the Law won’t give us the best betting odds as upside. With the TVG offer, we can benefit from less risk as a downside due to the risk-free bet that’s being offered, so this is a time we might want to look elsewhere on the odds board. If we were to bet Tiz the Law using TVG’s risk-free bet off, we’d want to bet him to win because we’ll receive a higher payout than if we included placing or showing in the wager.

If you canvas horse-racing experts, Honor A.P. is a horse not called Tiz the Law that comes up a lot. He’s offering around 5-1 or 6-1 on your money, which is a better payday on a win than Tiz the Law can provide. Of course, Honor A.P. is a longer shot than Tiz the Law to win the Kentucky Derby, but he’s the second favorite.

The gist of it is, when offered a risk-free bet, we’re looking to wager on longer shots because we always have the fall-back option of getting a risk-free wager credit that we can hopefully make up our loss on while shooting for some upside.

$200 Sign-Up Bonus from TwinSpires

Kentucky

With TwinSpires, new players can sign up for a new account and receive a $200 sign-up bonus. When you sign up using the links on this page, be sure to enter the code ‘BET200’ to be eligible for the offer. When you do, your account will be credited with $200 in bonus cash in increments of $100 for every $400 wagered.

To earn the full $200 bonus, new players will need to sign up using the code ‘BET200’ and then wager $800 within 30 days of creating an account at TwinSpires. This may sound like a lot, but turnover can go fairly quickly when you’ve got the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, September 5, and the Preakness on Saturday, October 3, to bet on.

How To Use TwinSpires’ Betting Offer

Similar to what we described for the TVG offer, we’d look to use the TwinSpires betting offer as a cushion that can give us some money back. While we discussed our pick for Honor A.P. to win, we wouldn’t shy away from betting on Tiz the Law to help us work towards claiming the bonus offer from TwinSpires.

The safest bet to make will likely be betting on Tiz the Law to show, which means the horse only has to finish in the top three to cash. The payout won’t return much compared to what’s being wagered, though.

We could also bet on a few more exotic Kentucky Derby bets instead of just straight bets. Exactas and trifectas are always fun to wager on. They’re longer shots to hit, of course, because you have to select more than one horse in an exact finishing position, but payoffs can be larger and they’re entertaining to sweat.

If you’re someone who is going to wager $400 or more on the Kentucky Derby, do so using the offer from TwinSpires so you can get some money back win or lose.

Taking the Boom-or-Bust Approach

If we really want to go big on betting the Kentucky Derby, we can take a boom-or-bust approach and fire on some of the much longer shots to win the race. The benefit here is that we can get our money back in the form of a wager credit thanks to TVG’s risk-free bet offer, so there’s a little cushion for us to land on.

Two of the horses offering very long odds to win the Kentucky Derby that we might want to wager on are Storm the Court and Major Fed. Both are listed around the 65-1 mark. Before you go thinking we’re crazy, let’s not forget about what happened just one year ago. Last year at the 145th running of the Kentucky Derby, Country Horse won the race as a 65-1 longshot.

Types of Kentucky Derby Bets

Bettors wagering on the Kentucky Derby can do so in many ways. You can bet on more than just a horse to win. Betting on a horse to win is a straight-forward wager that is exactly what you think, you’re betting on the horse to win the race. Other single-horse bets are “to place” or “to show” bets.

If you wager on a horse to place, you’re betting on that horse finishing in the top two positions, first or second. With a bet to place, you’ll receive a lesser payout than wagering on a horse to win because you have two chances for the horse to win instead of just one.

Likewise, if you bet on a horse to show, you’re wagering on that horse to finish first, second, or third, so now you have three chances to win. A bet to win will pay the most, a bet to place will pay the second most, and a bet to show will pay the least of the three.

There are several other horse-racing wager types you can place on the Kentucky Derby in addition to win, place, and show bets. Deemed “exotic” bets because they differ a bit from the norm, bettors can wager on the exact finishing positions of horses in the race for a chance at an even larger payday. The most common exotic bets are the “exacta,” “trifecta,” and “superfecta.”

With an exacta wager, you are attempting to predict the top two horses in the race in the correct finishing position. With a trifecta wager, you’re going even further in hopes of predicting the top three horses in the correct order. With a superfecta wager, bettors are attempting to nail down the top four horses in the exact order they finish in.

There is also an exotic bet called the “super high five.” As you might’ve guessed by the name, this type of wager calls for bettors to try and pick the top five horses in the race in exact finishing order.

Only the win portion of a win/place, win/show or win/place/show wager shall be counted as an Eligible Wager. If your Eligible Wager loses, you will receive a bonus equal to the amount wagered in your Eligible Wager, up to a maximum of $300 (“Bonus”). Limit 1 Eligible Wager.

Horse racing odds commonly use a pari-mutuel system to be calculated. The more money bet on a horse, the worse the odds will be and the lesser the payout. With pari-mutuel, the exact odds of a wager won’t be known until right before the race goes off when the betting window closes.
